Yesterday saw the IPCC give a code red for humanity and climate change. It was also the day Coal exceeded $100/ton given the global demand for the resource, with the commodity seemingly untroubled by the headlines, and pushing electric prices higher internationally. Here in the UK, coal is only used sparingly in recent years, mainly in the winter months, so its influence on power prices is marginal. However elsewhere in the world, particularly in developing nations, it is used as the main energy mix still. All that needs to change this decade according to the IPCC if we are to have any chance of saving the planet from runaway irreversible climate change.
